Raphael
- Italian painter and architect - the representative of the
High Renaissance.
From the classical clarity and sublime spirituality embodied
life-affirming ideals of the Renaissance. Early works ("Madonna
Conestabile", about 1502-03) imbued with grace, gentle
lyricism. In the paintings of the rooms of the Vatican (1509-17)
Rafael have glorified earthly human existence, the harmony
of spiritual and physical strength, reaching a perfect sense
of proportion, rhythm, proportion, color euphony, the unity
of the figures and the majestic architectural backgrounds.
Numerous images of the Mother of God ("Sistine Madonna",
circa 1513), art ensembles in the paintings of the Villa Farnesina
(1514-18) and the Loggia of the Vatican (1519, with the students).
In the portraits created an ideal image of a man of the Renaissance
("Baldassare Castiglione", 1514-15). Designed the
Cathedral of Sts. Peter built the Chigi Chapel Church of Santa
Maria del Popolo (1512-20) in Rome. |

For
centuries Raphael has been recognised as the supreme High Renaissance
painter, more versatile than Michelangelo and more prolific than
their older contemporary Leonardo. Though he died at 37, Raphael's
example as a paragon of classicism dominated the academic tradition
of European painting until the mid-19th century. |

Regarded
by his contemporaries as an almost divine being, Raphael was par excellence
the painter of harmony and grace.
In his work, which reaches the ideal expression of humanism in art, the
classicism of the second Renaissance is perfect. |
